How to Use a Knitting Gauge Calculator

Knit a swatch with the same yarn, needles, stitch pattern, and washing method you plan to use for the final project. Measure a flat section of the swatch, enter the stitch and row counts, then multiply that gauge by your target measurements.

Why Gauge Changes Finished Size

A small gauge difference can change a garment or blanket by several inches. If your gauge is tighter than the pattern gauge, the finished piece will be smaller. If your gauge is looser, the finished piece will be larger.

FAQ

Should I calculate with washed gauge?

Yes. Blocking and washing can change both stitch gauge and row gauge, especially with wool, cotton, linen, and superwash yarn.

Can I use this for crochet?

The math is similar, but crochet projects often need different yarn estimates. Use a crochet-specific calculator for blanket planning.
